West Bengal: The “Khela Hobe” Sports-Politics Shift & Legal Storms

JALPAIGURI/KOLKATA: As West Bengal enters the heat of the 2026 Assembly election season, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has pulled off a masterstroke in candidate selection that is currently the top trending topic across North Bengal. In a strategic move to reclaim the Rajbanshi and tea-belt vote banks, the party has officially fielded Asian Games gold medalist Swapna Barman from Jalpaiguri and former Bengal pacer Shib Sankar Paul for a key North Bengal seat. This “Sports-to-Politics” pivot is seen as a direct challenge to the BJP’s dominance in the region, using local icons who carry immense emotional weight with the electorate. Swapna Barman, a daughter of a van rickshaw puller, embodies the “Bengal’s Daughter” narrative that the TMC has successfully cultivated.

Simultaneously, a legal storm is brewing in Kolkata. The West Bengal Police recently failed to provide a comprehensive list of criminal cases against Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, prompting a sharp directive from the Calcutta High Court. Adhikari, who intends to file nominations for both Nandigram and Bhawanipur, has claimed that he is being targeted by a “political vendetta” orchestrated by the ruling dispensation. With at least 25 cases reportedly hovering around his name—most filed after his 2020 exit from the TMC—the BJP has branded this as “administrative harassment” designed to hinder his campaign.

Adding to the state’s tension is a massive social phenomenon: the “Great Migrant Return.” Over the last 48 hours, thousands of Bengali migrant workers from New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru have been flooding into Howrah and Sealdah stations. This isn’t a holiday rush; it’s a panic-driven migration. Rumors have spread that those working outside the state will be permanently deleted from the revised voter list during the ongoing “Special Intensive Revision.” Despite the Election Commission’s assurances, the fear of losing their “identity” in their home state has forced many to abandon their jobs and rush back to verify their residency.
