West Bengal Adopts Limited Remote Work Model for Government Officers
The West Bengal School Education Department has introduced a work-from-home arrangement for a section of its officers as part of efforts to reduce government expenditure and improve administrative efficiency. The initiative will allow selected officials to work remotely once a week under a roster-based system.
The West Bengal School Education Department has introduced a work-from-home policy for a section of its officers in an effort aimed at reducing expenditure and enhancing administrative efficiency, a senior official said on Friday.
Under the newly introduced arrangement, nine officers attached to various wings of the department will be permitted to work remotely once every week according to a roster-based schedule. The system will operate on designated days assigned to individual officers.
Officials said the move follows a notification issued by the department and aligns with broader directions related to cost-cutting measures in government functioning. According to the notification, the initiative was undertaken in line with guidance issued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the state chief secretary regarding efficient use of government resources.
Authorities believe the arrangement could help reduce operational expenses, including electricity and infrastructure usage, while also streamlining administrative functioning.
The introduction of limited work-from-home practices in a government department reflects the continuing evolution of administrative systems following the wider adoption of remote working methods in recent years. Further assessment of the arrangement’s impact on productivity and governance may determine whether similar measures are expanded in the future.
