A councillor affiliated with the All India Trinamool Congress was arrested in connection with a case involving the possession of live ammunition without valid documentation at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, police officials said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Amirul Sekh Islam, serves as councillor of Ward 14 of the Pujali municipality under the Budge Budge Assembly constituency in West Bengal.

According to police, Islam was taken into custody on Tuesday night after he allegedly failed to submit a valid licence for ammunition that had been recovered from his baggage during a security check at Kolkata airport in September last year.

Officials said the councillor was intercepted while preparing to board a flight, during which airport security personnel detected live ammunition in his luggage. He was reportedly given time to furnish legal documents authorising possession of the ammunition, but failed to do so within the stipulated deadline.

Police have initiated further legal proceedings and are continuing their investigation into the matter. Authorities are also examining whether the ammunition was linked to any licensed firearm or if additional violations may have occurred.
