PM Modi Takes Symbolic Boat Ride with Morning Walkers
KOLKATA: In a morning that blended spirituality with high-stakes political symbolism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprised Kolkatans today by taking a wooden boat ride on the Hooghly River at 6:30 AM. Accompanied by minimal security to maintain a “common man” connect, the PM interacted with local boatmen and morning walkers at the Prinsep Ghat and Ahiritola stretch.
The Prime Minister was seen trying his hand at photography, capturing the sunrise against the backdrop of the Vidyasagar Setu. This visit comes less than 24 hours after the conclusion of Phase 1 polling, where North Bengal and parts of the industrial belt saw unprecedented turnout. For political analysts, this “Ghat Diplomacy” is a clear attempt to soften the BJP’s image in South Kolkata, which goes to the polls in the upcoming phases.
During his 45-minute interaction, the PM reportedly discussed the “Namami Gange” project’s progress in Bengal and the potential for river-based tourism. The images, which were instantly shared on social media, have trended globally, framing the Prime Minister as a leader who remains “connected to the roots” even amidst the heat of an intense election cycle. Local boatmen expressed surprise, noting that while many leaders visit the city, few take the time to sit on the traditional wooden boats that have defined Kolkata’s riverfront for centuries.
