KOLKATA: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) early this morning executed a series of high-stakes raids in the Metiabruz and Garden Reach areas of South Kolkata. Acting on intelligence regarding a “sleeper cell” activation during the peak election season, the central agency apprehended two individuals suspected of maintaining ties with the proscribed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

The raid led to the seizure of encrypted electronic devices, several “pre-activated” SIM cards, and a diary containing a list of prominent religious and political gathering spots across the city. Preliminary interrogation suggests that the suspects were providing logistical support to “outsiders” entering the city through the North 24 Parganas border.

Security experts believe that the timing of this activation is linked to the upcoming Phase 1 and Phase 2 polling dates, aimed at creating communal disharmony. The NIA is currently investigating the financial trail of the suspects, which leads to a “Hawala” network operating out of Burrabazar. The state police have been placed on high alert at all entry and exit points of the city following these arrests.
