Kolkata Police Dismantle Massive “Vedu” Piracy App Network
KOLKATA: In a major victory for digital rights and intellectual property, the Cyber Crime Police of Kolkata conducted a high-profile raid this morning, dismantling the operations of the “Vedu” piracy application. The app, which had garnered millions of downloads for its unauthorized streaming of copyrighted films, web series, and live sports content, was effectively taken offline following a complaint from JioStar.
The raid led to the arrest of a 28-year-old tech graduate from the city’s outskirts, who is alleged to be the primary developer and operator of the platform. Authorities seized a sophisticated technical setup, including high-end laptops, routers, and servers used to illegally host video-on-demand content. The FIR, registered under the Copyright Act, 1957, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, notes that the application monetized its illegal activities through aggressive in-app advertising networks.
The “Vedu” app was particularly popular during the current election cycle for its illegal streaming of regional political debates and news broadcasts. Its sudden shutdown has left millions of users without access, highlighting the ongoing war between law enforcement agencies and the digital piracy ecosystem. Kolkata’s Cyber PS has warned that they are now tracking the “revenue trails” of the app to identify any larger international syndicates involved in the operation.
