Kolkata Police Arrest Garga Chatterjee in Election Misinformation Case
Kolkata Police Say Social Media Posts During Assembly Polls Triggered Cyber Cell Action
Garga Chatterjee was arrested by Kolkata Police on Tuesday over allegations of spreading misinformation related to Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during the recently concluded Assembly elections.
According to police officials, the case centres on several social media posts allegedly made by Chatterjee on polling day, where he questioned the functioning of EVMs and raised concerns about the electoral process.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand stated that the complaint was filed by the District Election Officer (DEO) of Kolkata North. Following the complaint, the cyber cell initiated an inquiry into the matter.
Police said Chatterjee had been summoned twice for questioning in connection with the investigation, but he did not appear before the authorities. Officials cited his non-compliance as the reason behind the arrest.
The development has triggered political reactions in West Bengal, with supporters of Bangla Pokkho criticising the arrest, while authorities maintain that the action was taken as part of legal procedures linked to election-related misinformation.
