In a moment of developmental respite, the much-anticipated Joka-Taratala extension of the Kolkata Metro (Purple Line) officially began full-scale operations today. The 3.5 km stretch, which had previously been running on a limited trial basis, now features a frequency of one train every 15 minutes, serving the densely populated southwestern suburbs of the city.

The project, managed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), is a marvel of urban engineering, having navigated complex land-acquisition issues over the last decade. The opening is expected to take significant pressure off the Diamond Harbour Road, which is currently one of the most congested arterial routes in the state. “This is not just a train; it’s a lifeline for the people of Behala and Joka who spend hours in traffic every day,” said a senior Metro official during the morning flag-off.

Political analysts note the timing of the full launch, coinciding with Phase 1 polling, as a strategic showcase of “infrastructure delivery.” However, for the average commuter, the focus is on the comfort of AC travel during the record-breaking heatwave. RVNL has also announced that work on the Mominpur-Esplanade section is being fast-tracked, with a goal to connect the Purple Line to the North-South and East-West corridors by late 2027.
