Dum Dum Stall Owners Fear Loss of Livelihood Amid Eviction Action
Railway authorities have begun action against unauthorized stalls at Dum Dum Junction Railway Station, deploying heavy security for the eviction process. The move has triggered protests from political leaders and affected vendors, who are demanding rehabilitation and alternative arrangements.
Railway authorities have issued eviction notices to vendors operating allegedly unauthorized stalls at Dum Dum Junction Railway Station, with the deadline for vacating the premises set for today.
To ensure the eviction process is carried out without disruption, a large contingent of security personnel, including the Government Railway Police, Railway Protection Force, state police, and the Rapid Action Force, has been deployed at the station.
The move has drawn criticism from opposition leaders and affected traders. Gargi Chatterjee said the issue should focus on rehabilitation rather than eviction alone.
According to Chatterjee, authorities should consider licensing and regularizing eligible vendors instead of removing them without providing viable alternatives. She argued that rehabilitation measures would better address the concerns of families dependent on these businesses for their livelihood.
Several stall owners also expressed anxiety over the eviction notices. One vendor stated that the shop was the family’s sole source of income and questioned how they would sustain themselves if forced to leave immediately.
The railway administration has maintained that the action is part of efforts to remove unauthorized structures and streamline operations within station premises. Officials have not yet announced any rehabilitation or relocation plan for the affected vendors.
The situation remains closely monitored as authorities proceed with the eviction exercise amid security arrangements and demands for alternative livelihood support.
