Cyber Crime Police Station Registers FIR Against Mamata Banerjee
An FIR has been registered against former Mamata Banerjee at a cyber crime police station in Siliguri following allegations that certain public remarks hurt religious sentiments, police said.
An FIR has been lodged against former Mamata Banerjee for allegedly hurting religious sentiments based on a complaint filed by a lawyer, police officials said on Wednesday.
The complaint was submitted at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station on May 20 by advocate Rinki Chattopadhyay Singh.
According to the complainant, the police had initially declined to register the case and accepted the FIR only after repeated follow-ups.
The complaint alleges that two remarks made by Banerjee — one during a religious event in 2025 and another during a protest gathering at Dharmatala ahead of Assembly elections — hurt the sentiments and beliefs of “millions of Sanatani Hindus across India and the world.”
Police officials confirmed that the FIR has been registered and further investigation into the allegations is underway.
The case adds to the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal, where political statements and public speeches frequently become subjects of legal and political disputes.
