Creative Freedom Essential, Says Veteran Writer
Veteran lyricist reacts to ‘propaganda film’ debate; praises recent cinema
Renowned lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has emphasised that creative freedom allows individuals to express their ideas through films and other artistic works.
Speaking to reporters after receiving a special honour from a city-based jewellery brand, Akhtar addressed questions surrounding the growing debate on so-called “propaganda films.”

“I don’t know what you mean by propaganda films,” he said, adding that he appreciated recent cinema, including the film Dhuandhar, which he described as excellent.
Akhtar reiterated that artists have the right to present their perspectives, highlighting the importance of creative expression in storytelling.
His remarks come amid ongoing discussions in the film industry about narratives, messaging, and artistic intent in contemporary cinema.
