Central Bureau of Investigation has formally re-registered a Regular Case to investigate the murder of Chandranath Rath after taking over the probe from the West Bengal Police.

The transfer of the investigation followed parallel notifications issued by the Government of West Bengal and the Department of Personnel and Training.

The CBI has invoked several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including Section 103(1) related to murder, Section 61(1) dealing with criminal conspiracy, and Section 111(2)(a) concerning organised crime resulting in death. Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act have also been added to the case.

According to the complaint filed by the victim’s brother, the murder was allegedly carried out through a highly organised and professionally planned conspiracy involving multiple unidentified individuals.

Subhash Chander Kundu, Superintendent of Police, CBI SC-I, New Delhi, has been appointed as the Investigation Officer leading the probe.
