Bengal Education Department Issues New Morning Assembly Directive
The West Bengal School Education Department has directed all state-run and aided schools to compulsorily include the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ during morning assemblies. School authorities have been instructed to ensure full participation by students and implement the directive with immediate effect.
The West Bengal School Education Department has issued a directive making the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ mandatory during morning assemblies in all state-run and state-aided schools across the state.
According to an official communication issued by the department, every student will now be required to participate in singing the national song before the commencement of daily classes. The order has come into immediate effect, and heads of educational institutions have been asked to ensure strict implementation.
The directive was communicated by the Director of Education in a notice sent to school authorities on May 13. The communication stated that the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ during morning assembly prayers should be made compulsory so that all students in schools across the state participate uniformly.
Officials said the move is aimed at promoting patriotism, national unity, and cultural values among students through regular participation in the national song during school assemblies.
The development has drawn attention across the education sector, as schools prepare to implement the directive in their daily assembly routines. Educational institutions are expected to modify assembly procedures accordingly to comply with the state government’s instruction.
‘Vande Mataram’, composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, holds a significant place in India’s freedom movement history and is recognised as the national song of India.
