West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday issued a strong warning against vandalism and attacks on police personnel, asserting that the government would adopt a “zero tolerance” approach toward such incidents.

Adhikari, who also holds the home portfolio, said strict legal action would be taken against those involved in violence and warned that if similar incidents recur, “no one will be worse than me as the home minister.”

The remarks came a day after protests linked to a bulldozer drive against alleged illegal structures turned violent in the Park Circus-Tiljala area of Kolkata.

According to officials, demonstrators allegedly pelted stones at police personnel and vandalised vehicles during the unrest, leading to clashes and injuries.

Following the incident, the chief minister visited the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Park Circus and met police officers as well as injured personnel involved in handling the violence.

Addressing reporters afterward, Adhikari projected a tough stance on law and order and stated that the era of “tied hands and feet” policing was over.

He also drew comparisons with previous administrations while emphasising stronger enforcement measures under the current government.

Police officials said investigations into the violence are ongoing, and action is being taken against individuals allegedly involved in vandalism and attacks on security personnel.

The incident has further intensified political debate over law-and-order issues and administrative measures related to alleged illegal structures in the city.
