Shubhendu Adhikari on Thursday instructed the police to strictly enforce noise pollution rules and take action against the use of loudspeakers beyond permissible sound limits at religious places and events across West Bengal, officials said.

The directive was issued during a meeting with senior police officers held at Nabanna, the state secretariat. During the meeting, the chief minister emphasised that noise pollution regulations must be implemented uniformly without any exception and warned officials against negligence in enforcement.

According to officials, the state government wants stricter monitoring of sound levels during religious programmes, festivals, and public gatherings, especially in residential neighbourhoods and near sensitive areas such as hospitals, schools, and old-age homes.

Residents from different parts of the state have raised complaints regarding loudspeakers emitting high-decibel sound during celebrations and religious events, often continuing beyond the legally permitted hours. Citizens have highlighted the inconvenience caused to patients, students preparing for examinations, senior citizens, and working professionals.

Police authorities have now been directed to ensure that organisers follow prescribed sound limits and timing restrictions under existing noise pollution laws. Officials indicated that action would be taken against individuals or organisations violating the rules.

The move is expected to lead to tighter monitoring and enforcement measures during upcoming festivals and religious gatherings across the state.
