More than 1,000 people lost their lives in road accidents across Assam during the first three months of 2026, according to official data released by the state Transport Department.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the department said the state recorded 4,219 road accidents and 1,008 fatalities between January and March this year, compared to 4,232 accidents and 1,035 deaths during the same period in 2025.

While the overall number of accidents remained nearly unchanged, nine districts accounted for almost 50 per cent of the fatalities. These include Guwahati City, Kamrup, Nagaon, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Barpeta, Dhubri and Hojai.

The data highlights the continuing road safety challenge in Assam despite a slight decline in fatalities compared to last year.
