Unseasonal rains temper early demand, but heatwave drives surge to 256.11 GW peak

India’s power consumption grew by 4.04% year-on-year to 153.99 billion units (BU) in April 2026, compared to 148.01 BU in the same month last year, according to official data.

The increase came despite unseasonal rains that dampened electricity demand during the first half of the month. However, a sharp rise in temperatures and heatwave conditions in the latter half led to a surge in electricity usage across the country.

Reflecting this trend, peak power demand climbed to a record 256.11 GW in April, up from 235.32 GW in April 2025, highlighting the impact of rising temperatures on energy consumption.

The data underscores how weather patterns continue to play a critical role in shaping India’s power demand, with heatwaves significantly boosting electricity usage for cooling needs.
