Fresh Rainfall Threatens to Disrupt Flood Recovery Across Odisha

Odisha is experiencing another spell of widespread rainfall following the development of a fresh low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The system has triggered heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of the state, raising concerns in areas that are still recovering from recent floods.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Warning for four districts — Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Bargarh. The remaining districts of Odisha have been placed under a Yellow Warning as further rainfall remains possible.

The situation has increased anxiety in Bhadrak, where rising water levels in the Baitarani and Salandi rivers have raised fears of renewed waterlogging, disruption to communication and further damage to standing crops. Many families affected by the previous floods are still struggling to restore normal life, with damaged roads, disrupted communication links, waterlogging and crop losses continuing to create difficulties.

The possibility of another rise in river levels has also heightened concern among villagers, particularly those who had only recently returned home after being evacuated during the earlier flooding. Authorities are closely monitoring vulnerable areas and maintaining preparedness to respond to any deterioration in the situation.
