AIIMS Introduces Advanced Smart Glasses for Accessibility Support
All India Institute of Medical Sciences has provided AI-enabled smart vision glasses to visually impaired individuals under a CSR initiative, helping users navigate surroundings and perform daily tasks independently.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences has distributed artificial intelligence-enabled smart vision glasses to 40 visually impaired individuals in a move aimed at improving accessibility and independent living through technology.
The smart glasses were distributed free of cost under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative during a function held at the Dr R P Centre of Ophthalmic Sciences. Each device is estimated to cost around Rs 35,000.
The AI-powered wearable device converts visual information into spoken feedback, allowing users to better understand and navigate their surroundings. The glasses can identify objects, recognise faces, detect obstacles, and provide navigation assistance in real time.

The technology is expected to significantly improve daily life for visually impaired individuals by helping them independently perform routine activities such as identifying currency notes, locating doors, and moving safely in unfamiliar environments.
Speaking to Akashvani News, Dr Praveen Vashist, who heads Community Ophthalmology at AIIMS, said the institute plans to distribute nearly 1,700 such AI-enabled glasses to visually impaired students already identified in schools across the Delhi-NCR region.
He noted that the initiative aims to empower beneficiaries with greater awareness of their surroundings and improve their ability to lead independent and confident lives.
The programme highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in assistive healthcare technologies, particularly in enhancing mobility and accessibility for people with disabilities.
