All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has successfully performed a Simultaneous Pancreas Kidney (SPK) transplant for the first time in 18 years, marking a significant achievement in advanced organ transplantation in India.

The highly specialised surgery was carried out on a 30-year-old patient suffering from end-stage renal disease caused by long-standing Type 1 Diabetes. The condition had severely affected the patient’s quality of life due to both kidney failure and dependence on insulin therapy.

SPK transplantation is regarded as the gold standard treatment for carefully selected patients who suffer from Type 1 diabetes along with kidney failure. The procedure offers a dual benefit by restoring kidney function while simultaneously enabling insulin independence.

Medical experts say the surgery is technically complex and requires exceptional surgical expertise, advanced perioperative care, and carefully managed immunosuppressive treatment protocols.

Speaking to Akashvani News, Dipankar Bhowmik highlighted the life-saving potential of SPK transplantation. He said the procedure can provide a definitive solution for both renal disease and insulin dependency, significantly improving long-term survival and quality of life for eligible patients.

The successful transplant is being seen as a major milestone for AIIMS and India’s healthcare system, reflecting advancements in multi-organ transplant capabilities and critical care management.
