Acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair on Tuesday officially announced her upcoming film Amri, based on the life of celebrated Hungarian-Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil.

Actor Anjali Sivaraman will portray Sher-Gil in the film, while Jaideep Ahlawat and Priyanka Chopra Jonas are also part of the cast.

Sher-Gil is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Indian art and remains one of the most influential artists in Indian cultural history. Known for her striking visual style and unconventional life, she challenged social and artistic norms during her brief but impactful career.

For Nair, the project has long been a passion venture. The director, internationally recognised for films such as Salaam Bombay!, Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake and A Suitable Boy, had first announced the biopic in 2020.

However, the production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier plans had featured Tanya Maniktala in the lead role after her collaboration with Nair in “A Suitable Boy”.

The announcement has already generated excitement among cinema and art enthusiasts, with many eager to see Sher-Gil’s extraordinary life and artistic journey brought to the big screen.
