Parents’ Complaints Prompt Action on School Fee Practices
Directive follows complaints of advance fee demands; aligns with High Court guidelines
The Directorate of Education (DoE) has directed all private, unaided, recognised schools in New Delhi to collect fees strictly on a monthly basis, warning of strict action against violations.
In an order issued on April 30, the DoE said it had received multiple complaints from parents alleging that some schools were forcing them to pay fees in advance—on a bimonthly, quarterly, or other basis—causing financial strain on families.
The directive clearly states that schools must not “mandate, require, or compel payment” of fees for more than one calendar month in a single instalment.
Officials emphasised that the move is in line with earlier government instructions and a ruling of the Delhi High Court, which underscored the need for a fair and convenient fee structure for parents.
Authorities have cautioned that non-compliance with the order will invite strict action, reinforcing efforts to protect parents from undue financial pressure.
