The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully busted a gold smuggling syndicate operating through Mumbai International Airport, seizing 2.6 kilograms of foreign-origin gold valued at around ₹4.20 crore.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, DRI officials intercepted two passengers arriving from Dubai who were allegedly attempting to smuggle gold into India. The operation was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal gold imports and dismantle organized smuggling networks.

During the examination of the passengers, officials recovered two concealed pouches containing gold dust in wax form. Subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed that the material was 24-carat gold. The total net weight of the seized gold was found to be 2,600 grams.

The contraband has been seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, and authorities have initiated legal proceedings against those involved.

Investigators traced the smuggling operation to a jeweller based in Navi Mumbai, who is suspected of coordinating with accomplices to facilitate the illegal import of gold. According to the DRI, intelligence inputs indicated the existence of a well-organized syndicate operating from Dubai and using air routes to transport precious metals into India.

Officials believe the seizure is part of a larger network engaged in cross-border smuggling activities. The agency is now examining financial transactions, communication records, and logistics channels to identify other individuals connected to the racket.
