A protest rally organised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity in Imphal turned violent on Saturday, prompting police to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Authorities later cleared the protest site and sent demonstrators back after tensions escalated.

COCOMI had organised a mass rally across Imphal and submitted a memorandum to the Manipur government, raising six key questions, including concerns over the April 7 Tronglaobi incident in which two minors and three others were killed.

The organisation sought updates on the investigation and action taken against those responsible.

Yumnam Khemchand said the state government considers the Tronglaobi case highly important and confirmed that the Director General of Police and the National Investigation Agency Inspector General are in regular contact to identify and arrest the culprits at the earliest.

Meanwhile, Govindas Konthoujam said the state has remained tense since April 7. He said the government had invited COCOMI for talks on April 22 and 23, but the group did not participate.

He added that some COCOMI representatives later submitted a memorandum at the Chief Minister’s office, and the government responded to all issues raised.

The Home Minister urged the organisation to resolve tensions through dialogue and reiterated that the government is making every effort to restore peace in the state.
