The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday said it had made a significant breakthrough in the NEET paper leak investigation by arresting P V Kulkarni, a professor based in Pune.

According to officials, Kulkarni is a chemistry domain expert from Latur who has served for several years on panels associated with setting question papers for the NEET medical entrance examination.

The professor was taken into custody from his residence in Pune after what officials described as extensive interrogation.

A spokesperson for the CBI stated that Kulkarni was arrested following detailed questioning as part of the agency’s ongoing investigation into the alleged leak of the NEET examination paper.

The agency claimed that the arrest helped identify the “source” of the paper leak, which triggered nationwide concern and led to the cancellation of the examination conducted earlier this year.

The NEET-UG examination, one of India’s largest competitive entrance tests for medical admissions, had been cancelled following allegations of irregularities and malpractice. The re-examination is scheduled to be conducted on June 21.

The investigation is currently focused on tracing the entire network involved in the alleged leak, including intermediaries, beneficiaries, and possible institutional links.

The case has intensified scrutiny over the examination process and prompted the government to announce major reforms, including plans to shift NEET-UG to a computer-based format from next year.
