Raw Material Supply Worries Mount for West Bengal Leather Industry
Leather industry stakeholders in West Bengal have expressed concerns over a potential shortage of cow and buffalo hides following stricter enforcement of animal slaughter regulations, with traders warning that the situation could further strain an already challenged sector.
The leather industry in West Bengal is facing concerns over a possible shortage of raw materials as stricter enforcement of animal slaughter regulations is expected to affect the availability of cow and buffalo hides.
Industry representatives said the impact is likely to become more visible following Eid al-Adha, which has traditionally been one of the largest sources of hide availability for the leather sector.
According to Muslim clerics and community leaders, cow sacrifice during this year’s Eid celebrations in the state fell to negligible levels, with many residents complying with the government’s regulatory directives.

Indian Leather Products Association President Md Azhar said the anticipated shortage of raw hides could aggravate challenges already being faced by the industry.
He noted that the sector is currently grappling with weak global demand, rising operational costs, and logistical disruptions, making the availability of raw materials even more critical for manufacturers and exporters.
West Bengal is one of India’s major leather-producing regions, with a significant concentration of tanning, processing, and leather goods manufacturing units. Any prolonged disruption in raw material supply could affect production schedules, exports, employment, and overall industry competitiveness.

Industry experts believe manufacturers may need to explore alternative sourcing channels from other states to offset potential shortages. However, they caution that such measures could increase procurement costs and impact profit margins.
The development comes at a time when India’s leather sector is seeking to recover from global economic uncertainties and fluctuating demand in key international markets.
