Nilayur Weavers Demand Urgent Relief to Sustain Handloom Livelihoods
Handloom weavers in Nilayur village near Madurai, Tamil Nadu, have appealed for urgent government intervention, including debt waivers, higher wages, subsidies, and interest-free loans, citing severe financial distress and shrinking incomes.
Weaver Radhika said she has been in the profession since the age of 12, continuing a family tradition, but current earnings are no longer enough to support a household. She said improved wages and welfare support are necessary for workers to continue in the sector.
Another weaver, Venkatesh, said rising raw material costs and low pay have made survival difficult. He stated that producing one saree takes two days, while earnings remain insufficient to meet family needs.
Ravikumar also urged both central and state governments to launch welfare schemes and establish dedicated weaving centres. He warned that many families may be forced to leave the profession if conditions do not improve.
The weavers said stronger policy support is needed to preserve the traditional handloom industry and secure livelihoods for future generations.
