Meghalaya Boosts ‘Ahimsa Silk’ Industry with New Facility
New Facility to Boost ‘Ahimsa Silk’ Production and Support Local Weavers
Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated an eri silk processing unit at Bhoirymbong in Ri-Bhoi district, aiming to strengthen Meghalaya’s traditional silk industry and improve market access for local weavers and artisans.
Eri silk, locally known as Ryndia, received the Geographical Indication Registry tag in 2025 for its distinctive non-violent production process in which silkworms are not harmed during silk extraction. The fabric is widely recognised as “Ahimsa silk”.
Addressing the gathering during the inauguration ceremony, Sangma said the new processing facility would help bridge gaps in the organised marketing of eri silk cocoons while also creating livelihood opportunities for local communities involved in weaving and handicrafts.
The Chief Minister also distributed financial assistance worth ₹35 lakh under the PRIME Meghalaya Scheme to support the project and encourage growth in the silk sector.
Sangma highlighted Bhoirymbong’s strategic proximity to Shillong Airport, stating that improved connectivity would help expand trade networks and promote Meghalaya’s eri silk products in broader national and international markets.
The initiative is expected to provide a major boost to Meghalaya’s indigenous textile heritage while enhancing income opportunities for rural artisans and self-help groups associated with the handloom sector.
