Centre Plans Advanced Satellite-Based Water Assessment Framework
The Ministry of Jal Shakti and ISRO are set to sign an MoU to enhance water resource assessment, monitoring, and management using satellite technology, while also launching a new research initiative focused on critical water challenges.
The Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening the use of satellite-based applications and advanced technologies for water resource assessment, monitoring, and management across the country.
According to the ministry, the agreement is likely to be formalised during the National Workshop on Research and Development in Water, scheduled to be held on June 1 at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre.
Focus Areas of Collaboration
The proposed partnership has already identified 24 priority studies and areas of cooperation, covering:
- Water resource assessment
- Water availability monitoring
- Watershed management
- Climate-related water challenges
- Advanced geospatial and satellite applications
- Data-driven water governance
The collaboration is expected to leverage ISRO’s earth observation and remote sensing capabilities to improve decision-making in the water sector.
Launch of MAHA on Water
A major highlight of the event will be the launch of MAHA on Water (Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas for Water).
The initiative is a joint effort between the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF).
Key Research Priorities Under MAHA on Water
| Focus Area | Objective |
|---|---|
| Water Resources Management | Sustainable planning and utilization |
| Drinking Water | Improving access and quality |
| Climate Resilience | Addressing climate-related water risks |
| Water-Use Efficiency | Optimizing consumption and conservation |
The mission aims to promote cutting-edge research and innovation in addressing India’s evolving water challenges.
Strengthening Water Security
Officials believe the partnership between Jal Shakti and ISRO will significantly enhance the country’s ability to monitor water resources in real time, improve forecasting capabilities, and support evidence-based policymaking.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader goals of improving water security, promoting sustainable resource management, and building resilience against climate change.
