BRICS Nations Gather in Odisha to Discuss Climate Resilience Strategies
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has emphasized the need for enhanced inter-state and international collaboration to tackle the increasing threats posed by climate change and natural disasters. He made the remarks while inaugurating the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group meeting in Bhubaneswar.
Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday called for greater cooperation among states and nations to effectively address the growing challenges posed by climate change, extreme weather events, and natural disasters.
The Odisha Chief Minister was speaking at the inaugural session of the technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRG), being held in Bhubaneswar.
During his address, Majhi reaffirmed Odisha’s commitment to strengthening disaster resilience, climate adaptation, and sustainable development. He highlighted the importance of sharing knowledge, technology, best practices, and resources among countries to improve preparedness and response mechanisms.

The three-day meeting is being hosted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and has brought together representatives from all eleven BRICS member countries.
The gathering provides a platform for participating nations to discuss strategies for disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, emergency response systems, and sustainable recovery mechanisms. Experts and policymakers are expected to exchange experiences and explore collaborative approaches to managing disasters in an era of increasing climate uncertainty.
Odisha has often been recognized for its disaster preparedness initiatives, particularly in cyclone management and early warning systems. The state has developed robust evacuation and response frameworks following repeated experiences with severe cyclones and other natural calamities.

Majhi noted that climate-related disasters are becoming more frequent and intense, making international cooperation increasingly important. He stressed that collective action and coordinated efforts are essential to safeguarding communities, infrastructure, and economic development from future risks.
The BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group meeting is expected to focus on enhancing resilience, strengthening institutional capacities, and promoting innovation in disaster management across member nations.
