BNP Leader Reacts to Bengal Poll Results, Hopes for Improved India-Bangladesh Ties
Azizul Baree Helal links BJP’s win under Suvendu Adhikari to progress on Teesta agreement
In a reaction from Dhaka, Azizul Baree Helal, Information Secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), expressed surprise over the outcome of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, where the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) was defeated after a long period in power.
Congratulating the winner, Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Helal said the victory could help maintain positive relations between West Bengal and the Bangladesh government. He expressed hope that bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh would continue in a peaceful and constructive manner.

Helal also referred to the long-pending Teesta Barrage Project, stating that earlier, Mamata Banerjee had been seen as an impediment to the agreement. He expressed optimism that under Adhikari’s leadership, progress could be made on the Teesta issue, which has been a key point of interest for both Bangladesh and the government led by Narendra Modi.
Highlighting the broader relationship, Helal added that despite ideological differences, both sides share common ground on several issues, including water-sharing and maintaining strong bilateral ties between the two neighbouring nations.
