Kharge Flags Challenges to Democracy, Social Harmony on 80th Independence Day

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday extended Independence Day greetings to citizens and said India’s constitutional values, democratic institutions and social harmony have faced “serious challenges” over the last 10 years.

In his message marking India’s 80th Independence Day, Kharge said the country had travelled a long way since independence, but several aspirations of its people remained unfulfilled.

He paid tribute to the countless freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for independence, saying their courage, sacrifice and faith in the nation continue to inspire citizens.

Kharge also called for ensuring equality and justice for economically weaker sections, stressing the need to uphold the values associated with the country’s constitutional framework.

His Independence Day message focused on the importance of protecting democratic institutions, maintaining social harmony and addressing inequalities as India continues its journey after decades of independence.

The Congress chief’s remarks come as the country celebrates its 80th Independence Day, with political leaders across the spectrum paying tribute to freedom fighters and reflecting on India’s progress and challenges.
