Shanghai Cancels 1,300 Flights as Typhoon Dolphin Approaches
China has stepped up preparations for Typhoon Dolphin, with more than 1,300 flights cancelled at Shanghai’s two airports and nearly 3.9 lakh people evacuated in Zhejiang’s Taizhou. The storm is bringing heavy rain and strong winds, raising the risk of flooding and landslides.
Authorities in China have intensified preparations for Typhoon Dolphin, with severe weather expected to affect parts of the country’s eastern coastline. Shanghai’s Hongqiao and Pudong airports cancelled more than 1,300 flights, representing around 60% of expected flights, as officials responded to the approaching storm.
The outer bands of the typhoon hit northern Taiwan, including Taipei, bringing heavy rainfall. Some Taiwanese airlines also cancelled flights to China as the storm moved closer to the mainland.
As of Saturday morning, the typhoon’s maximum sustained winds were estimated at around 162 kilometres per hour. The storm is bringing heavy rain and is expected to increase the risk of severe flooding and landslides, particularly in vulnerable areas.
The typhoon is expected to affect Zhejiang province and northern parts of neighbouring Fujian province. Authorities have issued warnings over the risk of severe landslides in Zhejiang and have stepped up evacuation and emergency preparedness measures.
In Taizhou city in Zhejiang, authorities evacuated around 3.9 lakh people on Friday as a precautionary measure. Officials are continuing to monitor the storm and prepare for potential flooding, landslides and other weather-related disruptions.
