Indian Navy commissions stealth frigate INS Taragiri

The Indian Navy commissioned the stealth frigate INS Taragiri at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam today. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the ceremony.

Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the warship is the fourth vessel under the Project 17A class. Its induction strengthens India’s indigenous naval capabilities. Addressing the gathering, the Defence Minister said maritime strength is central to India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He noted that the country’s coastline exceeds 11,000 kilometres and is surrounded by the sea on three sides. Nearly 95 percent of India’s trade moves through maritime routes, while energy security also depends on the seas. He stressed that a strong Navy is therefore essential.

He said the Navy has safeguarded commercial vessels and oil tankers during periods of tension. It maintains a sustained presence in key regions, including the Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf and the Malacca Strait. He added that the force also leads evacuation and humanitarian assistance operations when required.

The 6,670 tonne Taragiri is equipped with advanced stealth features and modern weapon systems. With over 75 percent indigenous content, it reflects progress in self-reliant defence manufacturing. Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Naval Staff Dinesh K. Tripathi and Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla were among the senior officials present, along with other naval personnel.
