Unseasonal Hailstorm and Rains Lash Pune and Central Maharashtra
A sudden and dramatic shift in weather has gripped Maharashtra as intense hailstorms and unseasonal rains lashed Pune, Nashik, and parts of the Marathwada region today. In areas like Hinjewadi and the Lonavala-Pune stretch, the hailstorm was so severe that streets were briefly covered in a layer of white, resembling a winter landscape. While the showers brought immediate relief from the scorching 40°C+ temperatures recorded in districts like Akola and Jalgaon last week, the timing has caused widespread panic among the farming community.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “Orange Alert” for several districts, including Mumbai, Thane, and Pune, for the next 48 hours. Meteorologists attribute this unusual activity to a combination of moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea and a north-south trough running over Karnataka. Atmospheric instability in the lower levels has created a perfect storm for lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph.
The state Agriculture Department has flagged severe concerns for the rabi harvest, which is currently at a critical stage. Crops such as wheat, grapes, and onions are highly vulnerable to hail damage. Farmers have been advised to move harvested produce to covered warehouses and halt any pesticide spraying until the weather stabilizes. In urban centers like Pune and Mumbai, the sudden downpour led to minor traffic disruptions and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Authorities have cautioned citizens to stay indoors during lightning strikes and avoid standing under old trees or electric poles.
