MC Targets BJP Over SIR Exercise and Missing Voter Names

Bratya Basu on Wednesday alleged that if the Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power in West Bengal, detention camps could be set up for deporting “bonafide” Bengali-speaking citizens whose names do not appear in the electoral roll after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

Speaking at the All India Trinamool Congress ‘Meet the Press’ programme at the Press Club Kolkata, Basu said it was surprising that almost the entire Union Cabinet and chief ministers of at least six BJP-ruled states were campaigning in Bengal.

He claimed the large-scale campaign effort was aimed at defeating Mamata Banerjee, whom he described as the only opposition woman chief minister fighting strongly against the BJP.

Basu also alleged that around 27 lakh names had been removed from the electoral roll and marked as “under adjudication.” He further claimed that those missing names could later be linked to the National Register of Citizens (NRC), leading to detention camps.

There has been no immediate response from the Bharatiya Janata Party or the Election Commission of India regarding the allegations.
