Legendary Playback Singer Asha Bhosle Dies at 92, End of an Era in Indian Music
Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose extraordinary voice shaped the soundscape of Hindi cinema for more than eight decades, passed away on Sunday at the age of 92.
Asha Bhosle was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday evening following chest infection and exhaustion. According to family members, she died due to multi-organ failure.

Asha Bhosle, one of India’s most celebrated musical icons, recorded over 12,000 songs in a career spanning more than 80 years, making her one of the longest-performing singers in global music history. Her first recording came in 1943 at the age of 10 for the Marathi film Majha Bal.
Often mentioned alongside her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar, Asha carved out a distinct identity with her unmatched versatility—effortlessly moving from romantic melodies and ghazals to cabaret songs, classical compositions, and peppy dance numbers.
Among her immortal hits are:
- Aaja Aaja
- Piya Tu Ab To Aaja
- Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar
- Dil Cheez Kya Hai
- In Ankhon Ki Masti
She collaborated memorably with legendary composers such as O P Nayyar and her husband R D Burman, producing some of Bollywood’s most iconic songs.

Born on September 8, 1935, in Sangli, she was trained in music by her father Dinanath Mangeshkar and rose from humble beginnings to become a global musical legend.
Apart from music, Asha Bhosle was also a successful entrepreneur, running her restaurant chain “Asha’s” in Dubai and the UK.
Her achievements earned her India’s highest honors, including:
- Dadasaheb Phalke Award
- Padma Vibhushan
- Multiple National Film Awards
Her passing marks the end of a golden chapter in Indian playback singing, leaving behind an irreplaceable legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
