The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday quashed criminal proceedings initiated against Azim Premji and other senior officials of Wipro over alleged violations of labour laws.

The court also set aside the summons previously issued by a magistrate court in connection with the matter. The order was passed by Justice Jafeer Ahmad while hearing a petition filed by Premji and other company representatives.

The case had originated from a complaint lodged by the labour department, which alleged non-compliance with labour regulations at Wipro’s office located in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

During the proceedings, the petitioners challenged the criminal action and the issuance of summons, arguing against the continuation of legal proceedings against top company executives in the matter.

After hearing the submissions, the High Court decided to quash the proceedings and provided relief to Premji and the other officials named in the complaint.

The ruling is considered significant as it concerns the accountability of senior corporate executives in labour law compliance cases and the scope of criminal proceedings initiated by regulatory authorities.
