Sitharaman Highlights Industry-Focused Approach of PM Internship Scheme
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the Prime Minister Internship Scheme is designed to bridge the gap between industry expectations and job seekers’ skills, offering young candidates practical exposure and financial support.
Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) has been designed to address the gap between the expectations of industry and the skills possessed by candidates seeking employment.
The scheme is being implemented by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and is aimed at providing young people with opportunities to gain practical exposure and develop skills relevant to the workplace.
Under PMIS, candidates in the 18-25 age group are eligible to participate. Interns receive a minimum financial assistance of Rs 9,000 per month.
The third round of the pilot phase of the scheme is currently underway.
During an interaction with interns, Sitharaman said the scheme was developed following discussions with representatives from industry as well as graduates and people who had completed Industrial Training Institute (ITI) courses.
The minister highlighted the role of such industry-oriented initiatives in helping young candidates develop skills that are aligned with employment requirements.
The scheme seeks to provide a platform where young people can gain exposure to workplace environments while addressing the skills gap that can arise between formal education or training and the requirements of employers.
