High Court Seeks Detailed Probe into Alleged Evidence Destruction
The Calcutta High Court has directed the formation of a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the sequence of events linked to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. The court ordered an investigation covering the period from the victim’s dinner on the night of the incident to her cremation amid allegations of evidence tampering and suppression attempts.
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered the constitution of a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate the developments surrounding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The court directed the SIT to examine the sequence of events beginning from the time the young doctor had dinner on the night of the incident in August 2024 until her cremation.
The trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered inside the hospital premises on the night of August 9, 2024, triggering widespread outrage across West Bengal and sparking protests by the medical community nationwide. The incident led to large-scale demonstrations demanding justice, improved safety for healthcare professionals, and accountability from authorities.
There have been persistent allegations that evidence related to the case was destroyed and that attempts were made to dilute or downplay the seriousness of the incident during its immediate aftermath. The High Court’s decision to order a fresh probe through a dedicated CBI SIT is being viewed as a significant step toward ensuring a comprehensive and transparent investigation.
The case continues to draw national attention due to concerns over hospital safety, institutional accountability, and the treatment of crimes against women in professional workplaces.
