The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on Monday said that the area coverage under summer crop cultivation has exceeded 83 lakh hectares across the country till May 15, registering a notable increase compared to the corresponding period last year.

According to the ministry, the total area under summer crops has expanded by more than three lakh hectares, indicating strong progress in seasonal sowing activities.

Rice cultivation accounted for the largest share, with sowing completed over more than 31 lakh hectares. Pulses were cultivated across over 24 lakh hectares, reflecting sustained focus on improving domestic pulse production and food security.

The ministry also highlighted growth in the cultivation of Shri Anna and coarse cereals. More than 16 lakh hectares were covered under millet and coarse cereal cultivation, which is nearly one lakh hectares higher than the area recorded during the same period last year.

Oilseed cultivation was reported over more than 11 lakh hectares during the current summer sowing season.

Officials stated that the increase in crop coverage reflects improved agricultural planning, irrigation support, and farmer participation in diversified crop cultivation. The government has been promoting the production of millets and coarse cereals under its Shri Anna initiative to encourage climate-resilient and nutritious crops.
