H5N1 confirmed in Tumakuru; surveillance intensified in forests, zoos, and sanctuaries
At least 44 peacocks have died due to the H5N1 avian influenza virus in Tumakuru district, prompting the state government to step up containment efforts.
Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has directed officials to implement strict precautionary measures across forest areas, including zoos and bird sanctuaries, to prevent further spread of the virus.

Laboratory confirmation from the ICAR–National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases established H5N1 as the cause of the deaths.
Officials said the fatalities occurred between April 16 and 21 in multiple locations, including Bommanahalli and Kolihalli villages in Urdigere hobli, and Bairasandra and Hullenahalli villages in Gulur hobli.
Authorities have intensified surveillance and biosecurity protocols, while monitoring bird populations to contain the outbreak and safeguard wildlife.
