‘We Will Bring Back the Tatas’: Bengal CM Unveils Investment Vision

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has pledged to restore the state’s industrial prominence by inviting the Tata Group to return, assuring investors of a transparent and people-friendly approach. He accused previous governments of mishandling industrialisation through coercive land acquisition and symbolic gestures that failed to generate sustainable economic growth.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday declared that his government would work towards bringing the Tata Group back to the state, promising a fresh chapter of industrial growth built on transparency, investor confidence, and employment generation.

Addressing a press conference, Adhikari criticised the industrial policies pursued by previous administrations, alleging that both the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) governments had failed to create a sustainable environment for industrial development.

He accused the Left regime of relying on forcible land acquisition, while alleging that the TMC administration largely engaged in “photo sessions” in the name of industrialisation without delivering meaningful economic outcomes.

“We will bring back the Tatas in Bengal,” the Chief Minister asserted, referring to the high-profile exit of the Tata Group’s small-car project from the state nearly two decades ago.

The statement evokes memories of the Singur movement, one of the most significant political and industrial controversies in West Bengal’s recent history. The Tata Group’s Nano car project, initially planned at Singur in Hooghly district, was shifted to Gujarat in 2008 following prolonged protests over land acquisition. The agitation, along with the Nandigram movement, reshaped the state’s political landscape and became defining moments in debates surrounding industrialisation and farmers’ rights.

Adhikari said his administration would avoid repeating the mistakes that led to those agitations. Instead, the government would pursue a development model that balances industrial expansion with public consent and fair treatment of landowners.

He further emphasised that attracting investments and creating employment opportunities for the youth would remain among the government’s top priorities. According to him, West Bengal possesses the resources, strategic location, and skilled workforce necessary to emerge once again as a preferred investment destination.

The Chief Minister’s remarks signal an attempt to reposition West Bengal as an industry-friendly state while addressing lingering concerns among investors regarding policy stability and land acquisition practices.

Whether the Tata Group eventually returns to the state remains uncertain, but the announcement underscores the government’s broader ambition to revive Bengal’s industrial fortunes and stimulate long-term economic growth.
