The Ministry of Railways on Thursday announced that the migration of trains to the upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS) will begin in August as part of a major digital modernisation initiative.

During a review meeting held at Rail Bhavan, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw instructed officials to ensure that passengers do not face inconvenience during the transition from the existing four-decade-old reservation infrastructure to the upgraded system.

The current reservation system was originally introduced in 1986 and has undergone several incremental updates over the years. Officials said the platform has now been comprehensively overhauled using advanced technology, significantly enhancing its processing capacity and operational efficiency.

Indian Railways has progressively adopted digital services since launching internet-based ticket booking in 2002. As part of its continued digital transformation efforts, Indian Railways introduced the RailOne app in July last year.

The app has gained rapid popularity among passengers, recording more than 3.5 crore downloads across the country. One of its notable features includes AI-based waitlist confirmation probability prediction, introduced earlier this year.

According to railway officials, the prediction accuracy for waitlisted ticket confirmations has improved substantially from 53 per cent earlier to around 94 per cent with the help of artificial intelligence and advanced analytics.

The upgraded reservation system is expected to improve booking efficiency, reduce system congestion and provide a smoother digital experience for millions of passengers travelling on Indian Railways every day.
