Sindhu Blows Lead Against Wang Zhiyi in Crucial Tie

PV Sindhu suffered a narrow defeat as India were pushed to the brink of elimination in the Uber Cup, while the men’s team sealed a dominant quarterfinal berth in the Thomas Cup with a 5-0 win over Australia on Monday.

Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu looked in control in the opening singles match against Wang Zhiyi before surrendering an 18-12 lead in the deciding game.

The Indian star eventually went down 16-21, 21-19, 19-21 to the world No. 2, leaving India trailing China 0-1 in a must-win Group A tie.

India now face an uphill challenge against defending champions and 16-time winners China, who also feature Olympic champion Chen Yufei and world No. 1 women’s doubles pair Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning.

In contrast, the Indian men’s side produced a flawless display to sweep Australia 5-0 and progress comfortably to the last eight of the Thomas Cup.
