Moscow Disappointed by Olympic Restrictions, Says Peskov
The Kremlin criticised the International Olympic Committee for continuing sanctions on Russian athletes, while signalling continued dialogue over Russia’s return to international sports competitions.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Friday expressed disappointment over the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to continue sanctions against Russian athletes.
The IOC’s stance is linked to ongoing concerns surrounding inspections by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) into Russia’s anti-doping system.
Speaking to reporters, Peskov said Moscow was dissatisfied with the continued restrictions but added that Russia would maintain dialogue with the IOC regarding the participation of Russian athletes in international sporting events.
Russia has faced multiple sporting sanctions in recent years due to anti-doping controversies and broader geopolitical tensions, resulting in restrictions on athlete participation under national symbols in several global competitions.
Meanwhile, reports indicated that the organisation has recommended lifting restrictions for athletes from Belarus participating in international events.
The developments come amid ongoing debates within global sports bodies over athlete participation, neutrality rules and the balance between sporting inclusion and international regulatory concerns.
Sports authorities and international federations are expected to continue discussions regarding the future participation framework for athletes from Russia and Belarus ahead of upcoming major sporting events.
