The Government of Tripura has issued a new memorandum introducing several measures aimed at reducing government expenditure and conserving fuel, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for austerity and reduced fuel consumption.

According to the order issued by the General Administration (Administrative Reforms) Department on May 13, 2026, all Heads of Department have been directed to ensure that only 50 per cent of Group C and Group D employees attend offices daily, while the remaining staff work from home.

Departments have also been instructed to prepare weekly duty rosters under which employees will attend office on alternate weeks. The memorandum states that preference during the first phase should be given to employees residing close to their workplaces in order to minimise travel and fuel usage.

The government further clarified that employees working from home must remain available through telephone and electronic communication at all times and should report physically to office whenever urgent work requires their presence.

The advisory has also been extended to public sector undertakings, local bodies, autonomous organisations, statutory bodies, and subordinate offices, encouraging them to implement similar measures wherever feasible.

However, the order will not apply to offices and employees involved in essential and emergency services.

Officials said the instructions have come into immediate effect and will remain operational until further orders are issued by the state government.

The move comes amid growing concerns over global fuel prices and economic pressures linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, prompting governments to encourage fuel conservation and cost-saving practices.
