Shift in US Policy Raises Questions Over NATO Security

Move could reshape European security as Germany calls for stronger regional defence

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to significantly reduce American troop presence in Germany, escalating tensions with German leadership and raising concerns over Europe’s security framework.

The Pentagon had earlier proposed withdrawing around 5,000 troops, but Trump indicated that a much larger reduction is now under consideration.

Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius responded by urging European nations to strengthen their own defence capabilities, emphasizing the need for greater regional responsibility. Chancellor Friedrich Merz is also at the center of the emerging diplomatic friction.

The US military presence in Germany dates back to the aftermath of World War II and expanded significantly during the Cold War to counter the Soviet Union. Today, Germany hosts over 36,000 US troops—making it the largest American military deployment in Europe, compared to about 12,000 in Italy and 10,000 in the United Kingdom.

The proposed drawdown signals a potential shift in US foreign policy priorities and could have far-reaching implications for NATO and transatlantic security arrangements.
