Revanth Reddy Writes to PM Modi, Proposes Balanced Approach to Delimitation
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the proposed delimitation exercise, warning that a purely population-based increase in Lok Sabha seats could upset the country’s federal balance.
In an open letter to the Prime Minister, Reddy argued that allocating seats solely on a pro rata basis without factoring in economic contribution would disadvantage southern states.
He proposed a “hybrid model” under which 50 percent of additional seats would be allotted on a population basis, while the remaining 50 percent would be determined using Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and other performance indicators. Reddy said the pro rata-only model would not be acceptable to southern states and cautioned that ignoring their concerns could trigger strong opposition, as the issue directly affects the principle of fair representation in India’s federal structure.
