The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee strongly condemned the incident, describing it as evidence of a collapse in law and order and raising concerns over the safety of opposition workers in the state.

The party demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible, a fair and time-bound investigation, compensation for the victim’s family, and protection for their safety.

Congress leaders also alleged that no FIR had been registered at the time of reporting, calling it a sign of administrative apathy.

Rahul Gandhi on Sunday strongly condemned the killing of party worker Debdeep Chatterjee, who was allegedly murdered during post-poll violence in Asansol.

According to the Indian National Congress, Chatterjee was closely associated with Prasenjit Puitandi, the party’s candidate from Asansol North Assembly constituency.

The party alleged that he was attacked and beaten by miscreants linked to the ruling All India Trinamool Congress and later succumbed to his injuries.

Rahul Gandhi said the Congress would not bow before politics of violence and intimidation, adding that such acts stain India’s non-violent democratic tradition.

The Trinamool Congress had not immediately responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
